The Newport City Council voted to buy a small, landlocked berm parcel near the Bailey pit on Highland Avenue after a presentation from Tom Brenier on March 6, 2017. Brenier said the parcel is effectively landlocked with no utilities and would primarily serve the city for stockpiling materials used by road, sewer and water departments.
Council discussion covered timing, budget impact and whether to wait for proceeds from another pending sale; Brenier and staff proposed splitting the $6,000 purchase price among multiple department budgets so the impact on any single budget would be small. The council added closing and title costs to the motion. "It's something you should take this opportunity and purchase it," one councilor said in support of the acquisition.
A motion to purchase the parcel for $6,000 (plus closing costs and title search) was made by Mister Vincent and seconded by Mister Morissette; the ayes carried on a voice vote and the purchase was approved. Staff were instructed to arrange closing and to allocate the costs among the relevant department budgets.
