Morganton awards $30,000 in CDBG public-service funds to five nonprofits

MORGANTON, N.C. — The Morganton City Council on Dec. 1 approved recommendations to allocate $30,000 in Community Development Block Grant (CDBG) public-service funds to local nonprofits serving low- and moderate-income households.
Jennifer Cannon, who presented the committee's recommendations, said the funds will be distributed to programs that support housing and basic needs. The proposed awards were: Fall Rec — $8,000 for housing support, first-month rent and "hope tote" household kits for displaced women; Brighter House — $8,000 for food pantry and kitchen/snack-bar project and client meal-prep support; Options — $7,000 for shelter supplies and possible deposits/first month's rent; Olive Hill — $2,000 for training toolkits to support low/moderate-income micro-enterprises; and House of Refuge — $5,000 for utility assistance, meals, and the food pantry.
"The city of Morganton has $30,000 in community development block grant funds for the fiscal year 2025 to provide public services through the funding of local nonprofits to benefit low to moderate income families," Cannon said, and the committee recommended the listed allocations.
Council moved, seconded and approved the recommendations by voice vote.
What's next: Staff will execute grants/contracts consistent with CDBG rules and monitor expenditures and program reports as required by federal and local grant management policies.
