Committee approves optional fluorescent pink for hunter-safety apparel

A House Natural Resources committee approved a bill to allow hunters the option of wearing fluorescent pink as a legal hunter-safety color, the sponsor said, after a brief presentation and questions from members. The measure was approved by voice vote.
The sponsor told the committee the change is intended to give hunters more choice and to encourage participation among women, who some members said are less likely to hunt because they dislike fluorescent orange. “The point is to give people options,” the sponsor said during the presentation. The sponsor also cited research suggesting fluorescent pink may be more visible than orange for some forms of color blindness.
Committee members asked whether the measure was likely to be altered if it reached the Senate and raised general safety questions about visibility. Representative McClain moved that the committee recommend passage; a second was recorded and the bill passed by voice vote.
The committee took no roll-call tally; committee members emphasized the change is an optional allowance rather than a replacement of existing orange requirements.
The committee advanced the bill to the next legislative stage.
