Detective says 123 mph in highway racing incident; Justin Smith case continued

Detective Dorel Wagner of the Louisville Metro Police Department’s traffic unit told the Code Enforcement Board he observed two vehicles racing on I-264 on Feb. 11, 2025, around 1:32 a.m., and that his radar captured one vehicle at about 123–124 miles per hour and a second at roughly 119 miles per hour.
Wagner said he was stationary and recorded front- and rear-facing video that showed the cars side-by-side at very high speed. "My radar actually caught them at a 124, and the second 1 was doing a 119 miles an hour," Wagner testified while explaining his multi-vehicle enforcement stop and follow-up traffic actions.
The defendant, Justin Smith, was not present; counsel requested a continuance and the board granted the request, passing the matter to March 14 at 9:30 a.m. for further proceedings. The board reserved a finding and asked staff to include the video and radar evidence in the record for the next hearing.
The detective and the board emphasized the public-safety risk of high-speed contests on interstate roadways and the potential for fatal consequences if control is lost at such speeds.
