Resident urges speed controls near Contillion Drive after near-misses

A Hickman resident told the city commission that motorists routinely speed on Contillion Drive and nearby intersections and asked the city to pursue signage, physical traffic calming or state action after a near-accident involving his grandchildren.
Michael McClure, a Hickman resident, told the City Commission that vehicles "speed up and down my street" and urged the city to consider speed bumps or more visible signage to protect children who play in the neighborhood.
McClure said trash and overgrown vegetation near the river are also a recurring problem and asked staff how to identify the landowner so residents could coordinate cleanup. He asked the commission to act after previous requests produced no change.
City staff responded that the specific hazardous intersection at the county "Y" is under the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet's jurisdiction and recommended residents contact the state highway department about structural changes. Officials also cautioned that speed bumps can be damaged by snow plows and that limited police staffing constrains continuous enforcement.
The commission did not adopt an immediate engineering change at the meeting; staff said they would evaluate signage options and provide guidance on whom to contact for right-of-way or state-highway changes. The city advised the resident to visit the county office/armory or the PBA office to identify property ownership for the river-side lot.
