Resident urges action on speeding and hazardous 'Y' intersection; city to consult state

Michael McClure, a Hickman resident, told the city commission he is worried about motorists speeding on Contillion Drive near his grandchildren's play area and asked the city to install traffic calming measures.

“What I’m asking the city to do is to help me, to see, can we put speed bumps out there?” McClure said during the public-comment period. He also described litter along the riverbank and asked who owns the adjacent land so neighbors can coordinate cleanup.

The commission and staff said the city can evaluate signage such as 'Slow' or 'Please Slow Down' but cautioned that physical measures like speed bumps can cause winter maintenance problems and damage city equipment. Staff advised McClure to contact the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet about the nearby Y intersection where drivers coming from Fulton and Union City merge, and said the cabinet controls state highways and might consider a different control there.

Commissioners noted patrol limitations but said police presence has increased in recent weeks. They described options ranging from signage and targeted patrols to seeking changes from the state highway department, which has authority over the intersection.

Next steps: staff agreed to evaluate signage options and routes for barricades or event closures if needed, and to advise McClure on how to contact the state highway office about the Y intersection.
