Reno police step up education and enforcement for modded e-bikes after summer spike

City police described a summer increase in illegal and modified electric bikes and scooters and said they are balancing education and enforcement to reduce crashes.
Chief Nance said the department has issued roughly 40 citations tied to illegal or reckless e-bike operation and that many cases involve juveniles riding unregistered or modified machines. Officials emphasized that high-powered or modified machines can meet moped or motorcycle definitions and therefore require registration, a license and safety equipment. "If it looks like a motorcycle, it—s illegal," the chief said, and noted the department—s strategy includes school outreach, parent education and coordinated enforcement with school-police partners.
Council unanimously supported a staff direction to coordinate with state legislators and regional stakeholders to clarify wattage-speed thresholds and enforcement tools and to return with recommended legal/ordinance updates and education plans.
