Community groups press Jefferson County to fund wildland fire management; commissioners note recent voter support

Cork Rich, executive director and founding board member of the Blue Mountain Forest Stewardship Initiative, spoke in support of the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office Wildland Fire Management Program. He described the community wildfire protection plan’s findings that many county roads in mountain areas are potentially non-survivable during a wildfire and urged the board to fund roadside fuel mitigation and other measures so residents can evacuate safely.
Chair Dahlkemper and other commissioners noted recent voter support for a county measure intended to aid wildfire risk reduction and described a new brush truck that will help protect foothills communities. Dahlkemper thanked Sheriff Reggie Marinelli and local open-space and fire teams for recent outreach and tours of training facilities.
Outcome: speakers asked for funding and continued county support; the board acknowledged the requests and highlighted existing and recently approved resources while directing staff to continue wildfire mitigation work with partners.
