McCarran enforcement up, city and NDOT roll out targeted safety projects after fatalities

City and state agencies described stepped-up enforcement and targeted engineering work along McCarran Boulevard after six fatalities year-to-date.
Reno Police Chief Nance said citations on McCarran rose from roughly 776 to about 1,200 year-to-date as the department increased traffic enforcement in problem corridors. He told council the common factors in fatal collisions on McCarran in 2025 included excessive speed and intoxicants, with several single-vehicle, high-speed crashes. "Most of our fatality accidents are single vehicle and with speed and or intoxicants involved," Nance said.
NDOT and RTC representatives briefed council on near-term infrastructure measures, including repair of a damaged guardrail and installation of advanced-warning signals (flashing prepare-to-stop) near Cashell and other intersections; capacity projects between Plumas and Virginia and other intersection improvements are in design but require funding. Chief Nance said the enforcement-engineering-education mix will continue and that regional partners will sustain twice-weekly enforcement efforts on McCarran.
Councilmembers requested follow-up updates and asked for continued coordination on timing and messaging around enforcement and engineering projects.
