Danvers board asks J & J Asian Cuisine to appear after underage‑sale during compliance check

Danvers police told the Select Board on Dec. 2 that a Nov. 12 alcohol compliance check found an apparent sale to an underage buyer at J & J Asian Cuisine, and the board voted to request the restaurant’s owners appear at a future meeting.
Chief Lovell said officers in the community service division used two underage male decoys during checks of the town’s licensed establishments. He described the incident at J & J, saying, "He approached the bar, ordered a Bud Light, and was served without being asked for identification." Officers then spoke with the manager and employee, who "acknowledged that they had made a mistake and not checked for identification," Lovell said.
The chief recommended notifying the manager and requesting that the owners appear before the board on either Dec. 16 or Jan. 6 to discuss the violation. After questions from board members about the number of checks performed (39) and whether the business had prior issues, a motion to request that J & J Asian Cuisine’s owners come before the board carried by voice vote; members voiced a preference for placement on the Dec. 16 agenda if the schedule allows.
The board did not at this meeting impose a licensing penalty; members said they wanted to hear from the business and have the owner or manager address the board before determining whether additional action related to the liquor license is warranted.
