Boulder County approves RFP to rehabilitate Prince Lake No. 1 dam

Boulder County commissioners on June 10 approved an action to proceed with procurement for construction services to rehabilitate Prince Lake No. 1 Dam following a presentation by the project manager.
Project manager Prashant told commissioners the State Engineer reclassified the reservoir from a "low hazard" to a "significant hazard" dam in February 2017, triggering more stringent state dam-safety requirements. He said the dam had been out of compliance for several years and the county worked with the State Engineer to design a remediation project.
"We plan to start construction, July 15 at the earliest," Prashant said, adding staff are "ambitious to complete this project by March" so the reservoir can be refilled for the 2026 water season. He described design work intended to make the reservoir resilient to extreme flood events and said staff coordinated with water-right owners and tenants to minimize impacts to farming and water use.
Commissioner Sullivan said she did not object to moving forward but is continuing to work through several outstanding questions with Parks and Open Space staff about communications and specific impacts to tenants and farmers. After discussion, a commissioner moved and a second approved the RFP action; the chair called for "all in favor" and recorded "Aye" responses.
Next steps: procurement will proceed under staff direction and the county will continue coordination with water-right holders and tenants. The county indicated more specific contract documents and timelines will be finalized before construction begins.
