Kennesaw SPLOST committee lays out submission dates, awaits July census for allocations

City staff and the Kennesaw SPLOST committee updated council on the timeline and next steps for a possible future SPLOST at the June 30 work session. The committee, appointed several months earlier, has met three times and is compiling city priorities and preliminary cost estimates.
Staff said the deadline to submit the city's draft project list to the county is Oct. 1, with county public information and input meetings scheduled for January and February and county Board approval targeted for April 28, 2026; the city must return intergovernmental agreements (IGAs) by mid‑June 2026. The county is proposing a six‑year SPLOST; staff said they are awaiting July population/census numbers before providing firm allocation estimates.
The committee chair (Marty) listed committee members and described candidate project categories including transportation and road infrastructure, parks upgrades, city buildings and municipal facilities, neighborhood resurfacing and sidewalks, property acquisition, public safety vehicles/equipment, and technology and cybersecurity investments. Committee members said they would refine cost estimates as county allocations become available.
Councilmembers said they want regular updates and asked that neighborhood resurfacing be a clear priority for some communities; one member asked the committee to return every two to three months to brief council and accept input. Staff said project minutes and HPC/KDDA reviews are being finalized and will be provided to council before full presentations.
Next steps: staff will update the committee work plan after the July census numbers and return with drafted project lists and cost estimates ahead of the Oct. 1 submission deadline.
