Berkeley Council adopts revised rules to align board and commission appointments

The Berkeley City Council on July 7 adopted a revised set of council rules and order of procedure (Resolution R13‑25) to align the appointment process with the city’s newly adopted boards and commissions handbook. The clerk told the council the principal change replaces section 6 to reflect the handbook’s appointment process and includes minor wording edits.
Council members praised the handbook work and asked that staff improve communication with applicants, noting it can take months between application and appointment. Council member Hennen urged clear communication to applicants so they are not left wondering whether they were forgotten. Council member Baker thanked staff for pulling together the handbook and rules.
The resolution was moved by Council member Patterson, supported by Council member Hennen, and passed on roll call with affirmative votes.
What happens next Staff will align appointments and communications with the handbook and proceed under the revised rules. The change is administrative and intended to make the appointment process consistent with council expectations and the new handbook.
