Planning staff requested and the commission approved an extension to the ASI Signage Innovations fabrication agreement so the vendor can complete four sign elements and continue work on gateway signs pending MDOT permitting. Staff also requested a $42,312 budget amendment to electrify the two Woodward gateway signs.
Planning Director Nick Dupuy said the vendor had been meticulous in developing scale models and that final fabrication required MDOT approval for the median installations. Dupuy said staff explored three options for power: directional horizontal drilling to reach the nearest source, tapping DTE streetlights (which DTE declined because meters and billing were not available), and on‑site solar panels. "We are recommending solar power," Dupuy said, noting small photovoltaic panels used successfully on other Woodward signs.
The commission approved both the contract extension and the $42,312 amendment by roll call. Staff will proceed with permitting and finalize the electrification method and procurement.
