Commission approves contractor insurance payment for helicopter herbicide work covered by grants

The Utah County Commission approved consent agenda item 6 after hearing from public works staff that a contractor procured through a state competitive process (FFSL) needed higher liability coverage to meet the county’s $3,000,000 insurance requirement. The vendor’s required additional premium for the county-level coverage was reported as approximately $1,500 for the current year.
Lehi Tanner of Public Works explained the vendor had bid under the state contract but asked that the county cover the differential between the state and county insurance requirements. Tanner said the helicopter spraying and herbicide costs will only proceed when grant funds are available; "these projects... we only pay when we have grant fund available," Tanner said, describing the grant-funded nature of the work.
Commissioner Ainge asked whether the county could accept the vendor’s existing insurance instead of paying the differential; staff noted that accepting the lower limit would be an option but warned of increased risk for the county given the nature of the work. Commissioners approved the consent item; the motion carried unanimously.
