Representatives for Sumption Sand & Gravel described plans to resume operations at a long-standing gravel pit near Tunnel Road. Company representative Brent Sumption said the site operated historically (since the 1960s–70s) and was previously leased and reclaimed; the family’s company purchased the property in 1989 and now proposes reactivation. Community Development staff (Peggy Kelsey) said there are no homes directly on the primary route and that the main trucking path would run from the pit to Tunnel Road and then to Highway 6.
County staff attached a travel-route and pavement-analysis prepared by CMT Engineering to the agenda; the study included geotechnical investigation and pavement design recommendations. Staff said bonding requirements will cover potential pavement repairs and worst-case resurfacing of up to two additional inches of asphalt; the operator must post a bond that would cover future restoration costs if the pavement deteriorates.
Commissioners asked about alternatives to a single route, neighbor outreach and traffic backups during loading; Sumption and staff said alternate, more circuitous routes exist but are less practical and that the main route had been used historically. The company and staff agreed to bring conditions, bonding numbers and road-preservation language forward for the regular agenda.
