Commission approves Forest Service agreement to reimburse canyon patrols and buy equipment for sheriff's recreation team
Summary
The commission approved a recurring agreement with the Forest Service providing $18,000 for patrols and $5,000 for equipment for the sheriff's recreation enforcement team; sheriff's staff said the $56/hour figure is an arbitrary grant placeholder and actual reimbursements use true wages and benefits.

The Utah County Board of County Commissioners approved a Forest Service agreement that provides funding for canyon patrols and equipment for the sheriff's recreation enforcement team.
A sheriff's office representative told commissioners the agreement designates $18,000 for patrol purposes and $5,000 for equipment purchases. On the hourly reimbursement listed in the packet, the sheriff's representative said, "The $56 is kind of an arbitrary rate" used to satisfy grant paperwork; the department's actual billing is based on participating deputies' wages and benefits and is reimbursed accordingly.
The equipment requested includes throw bags for water rescues and cold-weather/ATV gear assigned to deputies on the recreation enforcement team who patrol canyons, BLM lands and parts of Utah Lake. The sheriff's office said some similar purchases were made in a prior year when part of the allocation was shifted to equipment; this year's request aims to outfit new personnel and ensure the team is properly equipped.
Commission action: Speaker 2 moved to approve item 11 and the motion was seconded, and commissioners voted to approve the agreement 3to0.
The sheriff's office confirmed the $23,000 total (the combined amounts discussed) was anticipated as revenue and has historically been recorded in the county's appropriate account.
