Commission sets property-disposal hearing, approves closed sessions; public comments praise wildfire response

The Utah County Board of Commissioners set a public hearing to consider declaring surplus and disposing of a 6.42-acre parcel located at 1050 South 500 East in American Fork. Richard Nelson, public works director, explained the item was returned to the agenda after a noticing miscommunication; commissioners set the public hearing and a later agenda item will allow action to declare surplus if appropriate.

The board also voted to strike items 11 and 12 from the agenda and approved two closed meetings: one to discuss the character, professional competence or health of individuals and a second strategy-session closed meeting to discuss pending or reasonably imminent litigation. Both closed-session motions passed on voice votes recorded as 3-0.

During public comment, Richard Nelson and Cody Law (Utah County PIO) updated the board on recent wildfires. Nelson reported the Red Cross had limited use of shelter space despite 6,000 evacuees identified, and described robust community support. Law gave incident statistics: as of the prior night, the Bald Mountain fire was about 18,596 acres burned and 61% contained with roughly 601 personnel assigned; the Pole Creek fire was about 101,800 acres burned and 56% contained with roughly 1,227 personnel. Speakers praised interagency cooperation and said there were no reported structural losses or fatalities, though there were minor injuries.

Commissioners and staff thanked emergency responders and noted community donations and volunteer efforts, including local residents preparing food for firefighters.

The meeting recessed to closed session at the end of the public-comment period.
