Utah County commissioners approved a set of property tax actions that included waiving small penalties and interest in a handful of taxpayer cases and striking one parcel from the list for additional review.
Paul Jones of the County Attorney’s Office reviewed several cases in which taxpayers said mailed checks were not received on time or that automatic bill‑pay transfers arrived late. On the case of Mr. Broadhead, Jones said, "We never got the check," noting the county had not received the mailed payment. Commissioners discussed consistency in waiving penalties and whether system display issues (online totals not showing interest) contributed to late payments.
One commissioner moved to approve the property tax actions in the recommendation letter with specific adjustments: waive a $27.93 penalty for Parcel 51:20:213:0008, waive $14.64 (interest) for Parcel 48:273:0003, and strike Parcel 72476 from the list. The motion was seconded and passed 3–0. Later, on regular item 5 the commission made findings of "good cause" for some late applications and approved those property tax actions with required findings.
Commissioners asked staff to consider software or display corrections so that online bill totals clearly reflect interest and penalties, which staff acknowledged as a system issue to be addressed.
