The Utah County Commission voted to declare a set of firearms assigned to the sheriff's office armory and evidence holdings as surplus, authorizing sale or trade to federally licensed firearms dealers.
Commissioners questioned how items were classified (new, good, fair, poor) and whether some evidence firearms should instead be destroyed. Mike Brower of the sheriff's office explained that seized or found-property firearms are reviewed: unusable weapons may be destroyed, while usable but unsuitable weapons may be surplused and offered to licensed dealers or used for parts. Brower said the department sells or trades weapons that do not meet the sheriff's office standards.
A motion to declare the listed firearms surplus was made and seconded; the commission approved the motion by a unanimous voice vote recorded as 3–0. The motion was limited to the items listed on the agenda (item 16).
