County backs 'Wheeler Sawmill Canyon' name recommendation

The Utah County Commission voted 3–0 to authorize the commission chair to sign a recommendation to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names asking that an unnamed canyon be officially named Wheeler Sawmill Canyon.
Kaye Nelson, who described herself as a member of the Wheeler family, told commissioners the family purchased the property in the early 1970s and operated a sawmill on the site. The family proposed the name to recognize the sawmill’s historic role and the family’s long ownership of the property. Nelson said the canyon has no formal official name and that the U.S. Board on Geographic Names and U.S. Forest Service will provide formal review.
The chair noted the county filing is time-sensitive because the federal naming board was scheduled to meet later that week and recommended the county office prepare and submit the required form. Commissioners voted in favor after a short discussion and authorization for the chair to complete the paperwork.
The action was procedural: the county’s recommendation will be forwarded to the U.S. Board on Geographic Names and the U.S. Forest Service for their review and final determination.
