Council hears first readings for DeSmet Jesuit middle-school addition and Drury hotel renovation

City staff presented two planning items on first reading: an amendment to DeSmet Jesuit High School’s conditional-use permit to add a middle-school component, and a conditional-use amendment for renovations to the Drury Inn property and its conversion to a Drury Plaza Hotel.
Jason Jaggi, director of community development, told the council the DeSmet amendment (Bill 6135) would authorize up to 120 middle-school students at the campus, bringing total enrollment to about 820 students, and that no exterior changes are proposed at this time. Jaggi said Planning and Zoning Commission recommended approval and that the bill will return for final action at a future meeting.
On the Drury Inn application (Bill 6136), Jaggi said the applicant proposes a substantial exterior modernization and interior remodel, a rebrand to Drury Plaza, and the addition of one guest room (bringing the property to roughly 187 rooms). Developer representatives said renovations would be staged while the hotel continues to operate and targeted to begin in the fourth quarter pending required approvals. Planning and Zoning recommended approval of the amendment.
Council members asked about construction timing and impacts; developer representatives answered that the hotel would remain open during renovations and estimated a Q4 start if county and city approvals are complete. Both items were taken as first readings and scheduled for final readings at subsequent meetings.
