Southwest ISD approves SHAC recommendations for fentanyl-awareness and human-trafficking programs

Trustees approved two School Health Advisory Council recommendations: adding fentanyl-awareness materials to advisory lessons for grades 6–12 and continuing a live human-trafficking presentation for secondary students.
A SHAC representative said the fentanyl-awareness recommendation includes existing CATCH curriculum slides and a documentary video (no added cost) to be presented in advisory for grades 6–12 with an opt-out option for parents and a flyer with district contact information. The human-trafficking recommendation is the 'Lures and Lies' assembly delivered live to grades 6–12; that program is offered free but the presenting organization (identified in the meeting as Ransom Life) may request donations for the live presentation.
Trustees moved and seconded the SHAC recommendations and approved them as presented. Staff said the selected programs appear on TEA’s recommended list and that district staff will distribute parent information and opt-in/opt-out materials.
The approvals were procedural and did not change curriculum requirements beyond the advisory/assembly formats and parental choice options. Trustees requested clarity on donation decisions for the live human-trafficking presenter.
