Commissioners offer proclamations, crown fair queen and hear range’s ‘Metal Madness’ update

The board read and adopted a proclamation recognizing Minority Enterprise Development Week (Nov. 9–16, 2024) and celebrating 25 years of the local observance; Richard ******, executive director of the Cleveland County Business Development Center, described the week’s goals and recognized program partners and Emerging Leaders Academy participants (Richard ******, Madam Clerk). The clerk’s proclamation text noted collaborative workshops, networking events, and an awards gala (SEG 191-226).
Mary Eckerd introduced Belle Westbrook, the 2024 Cleveland County Fair Queen and Burns High School senior, and the board presented a commendation recognizing her academic and FFA achievements (Belle Westbrook, SEG 276-283; Madam Clerk proclamation SEG 308-327).
Commissioner Hudgens recognized the Foothills Public Shooting Complex and invited the range director to describe 'Metal Madness,' a family-friendly, 10-lane shooting competition introduced to North Carolina at the complex. The director described event format, safety measures, attendance expectations and partnerships (including outreach to Ruger and youth organizations), and said organizers hope to host regional and state competitions in the coming year (Range Director, SEG 342-483). Commissioners thanked staff and discussed potential future participation by other commissioners.
