Utah County commissioners declare August "Breastfeeding Month," cite local rates

Utah County commissioners approved a resolution designating August as Utah County breastfeeding month, citing national and global observances and public-health guidance. The resolution highlights recommendations for exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months and continued breastfeeding for at least one year and points to disparities in access to lactation support.

The measure was read into the record by the chair, noting Centers for Disease Control and Prevention figures and that Utah County's "ever-breastfed" rate exceeds the state average at 90.5 percent. Commissioner (speaker 6) moved to adopt the resolution and Commissioner (speaker 1) seconded; the motion passed 3-0. Chair (speaker 2) said, "Good job Utah County."

Supporters framed the designation as a public-health and equity measure that encourages employers, health-care institutions and insurers to improve access to lactation resources. The resolution states the commission's support for policies and funding to ensure lactating parents can access a full range of appropriate services.

The resolution did not include new funding appropriations; it formalizes the county's recognition of national breastfeeding month and affirms the commission's policy goals around maternal and infant health. The commission took the action during its regular meeting and moved on to other agenda items after the vote.
