Commissioners said they support modernizing fleet management but requested the county complete an audit of existing vehicles and uses before loosening mileage rules. The public-works presenter said the county is implementing AssetWorks, a new fleet-management system that will provide utilization data and help identify underused vehicles. One commissioner said: "Until we have that initial due diligence on our existing fleet and there's been some questions raised, I think it's for everyone's benefit to just get that answered."
Commissioners also asked for clearer procedures to document approvals for off-duty vehicle use and for human resources and the county attorney to advise on liability and insurance questions. Staff said some of the sheriff's office practices (e.g., deputies being "on call" in vehicles while off duty) reflect operational reality; commissioners asked for consistent documentation and semiannual reviews as required by policy. Staff will provide fleet-audit data and a refined policy for further deliberation.
