Students tell board AP classes were cut; superintendent asked to investigate

During the public-comment portion of the meeting, a student, Miguel Artiega, told the Tempe Union governing board that several AP courses were no longer available to non-gifted (on‑level) students at his high school.
Miguel said he previously passed gifted testing but that in his freshman year he did not pass a later gifted test and was moved out of the gifted program; he asserted that AP Biology and AP Literature were cut for on‑level students and that AP Biology was replaced by AP Chemistry on a rotating schedule. "AP Bio got completely removed," he said, adding that many classmates who intended to take AP Bio are now self-studying because no course is offered.
President Montero asked Dr. Wilson to look into the complaint and report back. No board action was taken during the meeting; Dr. Wilson accepted the request to investigate course availability and report findings to the board.
A second commenter, Daniel Perez, praised the newly offered Yaqui language class and the instructor’s engagement with students; that praise was separate from Miguel’s concern about AP offerings.
