Tool library seeks village support after losing rent-free space; board suggests applying for social service grant

Representatives of the Mundelein Tool Library updated the board Sept. 17 on operations and funding needs after losing their rent-free location and moving toward a paid lease.
Jonathan (representing the tool library) and Mark Wilson (treasurer) said the volunteer-run 501(c)(3) grew from roughly 1,000 tools two years ago to nearly 10,000 tools and about 1,300 members, and that a new space at 309 N. Seymour Ave. in Mundelein requires build-out and rent. They asked whether the village might support the organization through its social service grant fund.
Village staff said there is approximately $6,500 remaining in the current fiscal-year social service grant allocation but noted the 2024 program is closed and that the library should apply when the next application cycle opens after the start of the year; staff suggested library representatives contact the village manager or Assistant Village Manager John Petrillo for application guidance. Trustees encouraged the library to document usage data tied to Vernon Hills residents and consider applying to Libertyville Township and other funders already receptive to their materials.
"We are open to all Vernon Hills residents and beyond," Jonathan said, describing recent service expansion. The board responded positively and invited the organization to coordinate with staff about possible grant funding and to return with an application.
No financial award or decision was made at the meeting; staff will provide application details and the library will pursue grant and private funding opportunities.
