Parks board approves Boo at the Zoo price increase, kitchen change order and free food pantries

The Evansville Parks Board at its July 10 meeting approved several routine yet practical items affecting events, projects and community services.
Change order and community kitchen: Director Crook presented a VPS architecture change order for plumbing in the community kitchen. Although the change order is listed at $1,000, Crook said an earlier credit on the project means the net additional project cost is $149. Board members were told Dan Coe is the general contractor; the board approved the change order.
Mesker Park Zoo — Boo at the Zoo: Eric Beck, executive director of Mesker Park Zoo and Botanic Garden, asked permission to close the zoo early on the two final October weekends to set up the ticketed "Boo at the Zoo" event and for a sensory day on Monday, Oct. 28. He said Fridays and Saturdays the admission gate would close at 2 p.m. with the event running 5–8 p.m., and Sundays the gate would close at 1 p.m. with the event running 3–6 p.m. Beck said the event draws an estimated 10,000–20,000 visitors and that admission prices have not changed in 20 years. The board approved closing the zoo early and a $2 increase in ticket prices, raising general admission from $8 to $10 and member admission from $6 to $8.
Little free food pantries: Director Crook described a last-minute request from Feed Evansville, which has funding to place small, Little Free-style food pantries at multiple city locations, including parks. Crook said Feed Evansville will coordinate exact locations with park maintenance superintendent Scott Vankhauser, will begin tentative installations on the 20th, and will monitor and restock the boxes for an initial two-year period; items will typically be nonperishable snack and food items. The board approved the installations.
Other items: Crook also reviewed upcoming city events — the city swim meet at Deaconess Aquatic Center, a ribbon cutting for a futsal court the week of July 29/Aug. (date to be announced), movies in the park at Weslman's and a Pacers clinic at the C.K. Newsome Center. The board accepted payroll and vendor claims and adjourned.
