Tempe Union board approves consent agenda, tuition and contracts, adopts goals and proclaims Joaquin 'Jocko' Fajardo Day

The board then approved tuition rates for international students for the 2023–24 school year (Item I1) after a motion by Member Hodge and a second by Vice President Steele; the motion passed 5-0. Item I2, contract renewals for fiscal year 2023–24, was also moved and seconded and approved 5-0.
In new business the board presented final draft goals for the 2023–24 year. Member Barraza raised concerns about measuring a proposed 5% change in attendance; district staff recommended rephrasing the goal to "maintain 90% or higher attendance across all students and all subgroups." The board agreed to the revised phrasing and adopted the goals by motion, recorded as passed 5-0.
Member James introduced a resolution recognizing Tempe High alumnus Joaquin "Jocko" Fajardo, recounting his activities at Tempe High and later career and volunteer work. The resolution (which references Fajardo's death on 07/14/2023) proclaims 08/22/2023 as Joaquin Fajardo Day in Tempe Union; the board adopted the resolution unanimously.
Financial reports through Aug. 7, 2023 were received as information. The board also heard communications from members, including site visits and donations to multiple schools that were read into the record. The meeting was adjourned with the next regular meeting scheduled for 09/06/2023.
