The Board of Visitors approved a new Cadet & Personnel Affairs Committee to expand oversight across cadet well‑being, Title IX, human resources, counseling and chaplain services. In the ensuing debate some board members cautioned that consolidating diversity oversight into a broader committee could be perceived as a step back in the institute’s public commitment to diversity.
Board discussion focused on the committee’s scope and the wording of bylaws. One board member warned that removing a stand‑alone diversity committee might lead external observers to conclude the board had "walked away" from previous commitments. Several members responded that the new structure reflected maturation of the institute’s diversity work and better aligns oversight resources across related functions. To address the concern, a motion to amend the bylaw language by inserting "and inclusion" after "diversity" passed by voice vote.
Administrators and members emphasized that the institute’s Inclusive Excellence materials and strategic plan will continue to be linked publicly and that committee web pages will highlight the ongoing work so the public can easily find the institute’s commitments and programming.
What’s next: governance staff will update bylaws and public committee descriptions and add links to Inclusive Excellence resources on the institute website to ensure continuity of messaging and transparency.
