SFPD reports Dec. 1 officer-involved shooting; commission requests evening town hall

Chief William Scott told the Police Commission on Dec. 6 that San Francisco police officers responded Dec. 1 to a reported carjacking and that an officer-involved shooting occurred after a suspect exited a state-lottery van. The suspect was taken to Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital and pronounced deceased.
The chief gave operational details: officers observed a second vehicle, detained several occupants, and chased a state-lottery van that stopped at a locked gate on Griffith Street and Fitzgerald Avenue; the shooting followed. Body-worn camera footage from involved officers has been recovered and the San Francisco District Attorney—s Office, Police Internal Affairs Division, the Department of Police Accountability and the Chief Medical Examiner are participating in the investigation.
Chief Scott said a suspect arrested Nov. 28 was booked on a separate Sept. 16 stabbing that left the city with 56 homicides year-to-date. He said shootings were down about 8.4 percent year-to-date compared with the prior year and noted efforts to stabilize the homicide rate in the final weeks of 2017.
Commissioners asked that the department move the town-hall meeting on the officer-involved shooting to an evening start so more members of the public can attend; the chief agreed to explore an evening time and noted venue availability could require an alternate date. The department directed members of the public with information about the Dec. 1 incident to call the SFPD tip line or send a text message beginning with "SFPD."
The commission did not take a vote on investigative findings; the department described the investigation as active and ongoing.
