The Port Commission on a routine agenda item on Oct. 2013 publicly commended the organizers and partners behind this summer’s America’s Cup races and heard business and labor groups describe local economic and workforce benefits.
Executive Director Monique Moyer presented plaques and thanks to partners including the Golden Gate Yacht Club and the America’s Cup Event Authority, saying the event “has been an honor to work with each and every one of you” and noting how the waterfront drew large crowds and new public access opportunities. Norbert Byron, identified in the meeting as Commodore of the Golden Gate Yacht Club, thanked the Port and singled out key staff and volunteers for their role in bringing the Cup to San Francisco.
Local business and travel industry representatives described measurable lifts to tourism and hospitality. Didi Workman of the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce said the races “brought thousands of spectators to our waterfront” and added that the event provided hundreds of jobs. Kevin Carroll, executive director of the Hotel Council of San Francisco, thanked the Port and organizers and said the Cup “demonstrates San Francisco’s leadership” in hosting major waterfront events.
Monique Moyer also used her report to announce two upcoming waterfront events tied to the season: Wharf Fest on Saturday, Oct. 26 and Sunday, Oct. 27 (11 a.m. to 6 p.m.) in Fisherman’s Wharf featuring live entertainment, food and family programs; and a series of Saturday‑night fireworks in October to mark Pier 39’s 35th anniversary. The Executive Director said the Port and Pier 39 would share programming and that fireworks and free music would occur on Saturday evenings in October.
The commissioners offered unanimous praise and directed staff to collect and present economic impact data from the America’s Cup organizing committee for a future meeting, with the organizing committee’s economic report expected later in November.
The meeting’s public comment and commendation items contained no formal votes or policy actions beyond the planned public events and recognitions.
