Rutherford board accepts $73,676.98 in RAF and Casadanti grants, awards teacher projects

The Rutherford Board of Education on Monday accepted $73,676.98 in grants from the Rutherford Aid Foundation (RAF) and the Casadanti family and presented certificates to the teachers whose proposals were funded.
Superintendent Jack Hurley thanked donors and staff for the work that produced the awards, identifying the RAF and the Casadanti family as lead contributors. “I thank Mrs. Casadanti for being here tonight and again for her continued support of the RAF and our faculty and our students,” Hurley said.
The board described the grants as a mix of larger and smaller awards intended to supplement the regular budget. The meeting record lists the total awarded as $73,676.98; at the meeting Hurley cited a contribution of $4,635 from the Casadanti family and said the remainder came from the RAF. School officials said teachers apply through building administrators and the RAF reviews and awards grants annually.
Board members read the list of funded projects and recipients at the meeting. Examples included classroom technology and learning supports at Lincoln School (iPad devices and communication devices for nonverbal students), broadcast‑journalism iPads and Sphero Bolt robots at Pierpont School, a textiles-room update and a two-part grant for the high‑school textiles program, a batting machine and chemistry‑club initiative at Rutherford High School, and multiple social‑emotional and enrichment projects at Union, Washington and the kindergarten center.
Catherine Glide of the RAF was acknowledged at the meeting and recipients were invited for group photographs with the board. Board members said the awards support programs that go beyond what the district budget covers and thanked teachers and volunteers for preparing proposals.
The board did not take further action on the grants beyond acceptance and recognition; officials said implementation will be handled by the schools and the RAF as described in the grant approvals.
