Commissioners adopt stormwater ordinances to meet IDEM deadline

The Vanderburgh County Board of Commissioners approved two final-reading ordinances Sept. 10 updating county code on illicit discharge into the stormwater collection system and construction-site stormwater runoff controls to comply with state and federal mandates. County staff said the ordinances reflect the minimum requirements contained in state guidance and were adopted in order to meet an Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) deadline.
“We within the parameters that the state allowed, we tried to keep this to the minimum requirements that the State required rather than be more restrictive,” one staff member said. Staff further told the board the county must show adoption to IDEM by Sept. 27 or the state could step in to review the county’s practices.
Commissioners discussed the ordinances briefly and approved both on final reading. Staff said the county could amend the ordinances later if local controls require changes.
The board’s action ensures Vanderburgh County’s code aligns with the state’s stormwater program requirements and meets the near-term IDEM compliance timeline.
