City climate staff on Sept. 11 said they are conducting an investigation into recycling practices at municipal facilities and plan to pilot improvements under the Climate Action Plan’s waste strategies. The investigation will gather current operational details and historical context to inform recommendations.
Lauren Norvell said the key partners in the effort include Jean Carlson from the Solid Waste Management District, City Councilwoman Mary Allen, the City-County Building Authority (which manages facilities) and Public Services, which contracts for waste collection. Norvell said the work aims to have city operations model the recycling behavior the collaborative wants to see in the community.
"So, increasing recycling rates is part of that," Norvell said, adding that Mary Allen will work with staff weekly this fall on waste-management strategies. The board discussed whether the work aligns with broader sustainability goals and technical teams already doing CAP revision work.
Staff did not provide specific budget numbers or a timeline for implementation at the meeting; they described the work as an "investigation" to collect information and identify practical steps. Staff said they will return with findings and invited board input and participation from technical team members.
