Hamilton Township honors senior‑center director for life‑saving response

The Hamilton Township Council presented a joint proclamation Oct. 15 recognizing Kathleen M. Fitzgerald, director of health, recreation and senior services, for performing life‑saving first aid after a senior at the township senior center became unresponsive on Sept. 24, 2024. The proclamation, read aloud at the meeting, said Fitzgerald retrieved the facility’s automated external defibrillator, performed an initial AED assessment, began CPR and continued until paramedics arrived and transported the individual to a local hospital.

“Because of your heroic efforts, a life was saved,” the proclamation read, noting that staff later confirmed the individual was in good health. Council President read the resolution on behalf of Mayor Jeffrey S. Martin and the council and asked the chamber to join in thanking Fitzgerald for “swift, calm and professional actions.”

Fitzgerald accepted the recognition and told the council she was grateful for the honor and appreciative of the support of senior‑center staff. Her remarks were brief and focused on the team response and the importance of training.

The presentation was placed early on the meeting agenda and received applause from council members and members of the public. Council members said the recognition underscores the value of training and readiness at township facilities. No formal action beyond the proclamation was required; council continued with the regular meeting afterward.
