Council approves $34,200 work order for railroad casing to address drainage basin

Harrisburg City Council approved a $34,200 work order (No. 24352) to fund survey, design, railroad coordination, construction documents, bidding and construction administration for a casing pipe beneath the railroad at Prospect Street.
Chad, representing the engineering department, explained the casing will allow a future drainage pipe to move stormwater from the west side of the tracks to the east side through a large basin that drains roughly 3,000 acres. Chad said the casing is part of a longer-term, regional drainage solution and that permanent piping across adjacent properties will be implemented as those lands develop.
Council voted to authorize the work order to proceed. Engineering staff said the work is a continuation of prior coordination with property owners and will include working with the railroad on permits and crossing protections.
Next steps: engineering will proceed with survey and design, coordinate permits with the railroad, and return to council or staff with bidding results and a construction schedule.
