Board reviews fall academic data and English‑learner services; district highlights gains and areas to improve

District staff presented a fall data update covering reading, math, science, attendance and ninth‑grade on‑track metrics, and the board heard the annual Oregon English Learners report with a local programming update.

The district’s K–5 DIBELS reading measure showed a 1% increase overall with grade-level gains at 1, 2, 4 and 5; staff described district reading percentiles between the mid‑40s and 50th nationally. Math proficiency measured by i‑Ready fell about 1 percentage point with district math percentiles generally in the 30s. The Oregon State Assessment district averages varied by grade and subject; staff reported a district average of roughly 73% in ELA and math for the grades that the state assessment represents.

Attendance was a notable improvement: the share of students attending 90% or more of the time rose from 65% to 72%, which staff said contributes to higher opportunities for proficiency. Ninth‑grade on‑track to graduate rose to 93%, an increase of nine percentage points compared with the previous report.

The board also received the statewide Oregon English Learners report and local implications from district staff ('Jeremy'), who said South Lane’s multilingual learners represent just over 9% of the district and that the district uses an integrated/co‑teaching model at elementary schools. The district was noted in the state report for having students with interrupted formal education (21 students), a factor staff said adds complexity to bringing learners up to grade level. The board voted to accept Jeremy’s recommended practices and policies for EL services.

Board members asked for ongoing updates and said staff will continue to bring data at scheduled intervals throughout the year.
