SFPD chief reports same-day officer-involved shooting; town hall to be scheduled

Chief William Scott told the San Francisco Police Commission on May 3 that an officer-involved shooting occurred at about 11:22 a.m. on the 900 block of Market Street after officers intervened in a stabbing.
The chief said at least one officer discharged a firearm. "The person who was stabbed was transported to [the] hospital for treatment," he said, and "the second subject was pronounced deceased." Scott said the incident is "under investigation by the San Francisco Police Department's homicide unit and internal affairs divisions," and that the San Francisco District Attorney's Independent Investigations Bureau, the Department of Police Accountability and the Medical Examiner's Office are involved. "This information is preliminary and remains an active and ongoing investigation," he added.
The department said the stabbed person is expected to recover. Scott said the city will hold a town-hall meeting on the officer-involved shooting "within the next two days" following past practice and Department of Justice recommendations; the date and location had not been set at the meeting.
The chief also summarized recent district incidents and citywide trends: multiple homicides, several shootings in the Bayview, Taraval and Southern districts, and two recent fatal traffic collisions. He reported year-to-date homicide counts of 18 compared with 16 at the same point last year, 48 nonfatal shooting victims versus 53 last year, and 373 firearms seized so far this year, an increase from the prior year. Scott framed the increase in firearms seizures as a potential tool to reduce shootings but emphasized that the shooting from that morning remains under active review.
The commission fielded no substantive on-the-record challenges to the chief's account during the report portion of the meeting. Scott said investigators will "meet out the facts as the investigation continues" and reiterated that further information will be released after investigative steps and in advance of the planned community forum.
