Planning and Development staff said the Arts Commission issued a call that drew 135 applicants, of which 23 were qualified and four finalists were interviewed. A seven‑member jury recommended the collaboration of Laura Haddad and Tom Droogan for a concept called "Transfiguration," which uses geometric imagery and LED lighting to highlight local ecological and cultural references (cherries, shorebirds, Butchertown history and community mural traditions).
David Beaupre, representing Port planning staff, said the selected team emphasized community outreach and a low‑maintenance design. Commissioners asked about maintenance and materials; staff said the port would be ultimately responsible for maintenance and that artists would develop a maintenance program with warranties on lighting components.
The commission voted by voice to approve the authorization to execute a contract with Haddad & Droogan for the Pier 92 Grain Silo project; staff said installation was targeted for September in time for the port’s 150th anniversary celebrations.
What happens next: Staff will work with the artists and the Arts Commission on community outreach, lighting tests and final engineering and fabrication prior to installation.
