Port outlines 150th anniversary programming, pylons and banners along Embarcadero

Port staff described a yearlong 150th anniversary program with a birthday event at Pier 39 (April 24), Maritime Day across 7.5 miles of waterfront (April 28), 20 interpretive pylons and Embarcadero banners from April 1 to Nov. 1, and a program of lectures and exhibits.
Renee Dunn Martin, Public Relations Manager, presented plans for the Port's 150th anniversary celebration and Maritime Day. The Port plans a media event and birthday celebration at Pier 39 on Wednesday, April 24 and a day-long Maritime Day on Sunday, April 28 that will include public boat tours, historic lectures, bicycle rides, photo exhibits and other family activities spanning the Port's 7.5 miles from High Street Pier to Heron's Head Park.
Dan Hodap (Planning & Development) described a visual program to complement the events: 20 interpretive pylons, each a 15-foot, 3-foot-diameter corrugated column with a historic image and a short "Did You Know?" panel placed along the Embarcadero and a banner program on light poles and promenades that also can serve as backdrops for events and commemorative merchandise. Hodap emphasized the pylons are kit-built, lightly affixed (about 1,600 pounds of ballast per pylon), engineered for wind and earthquake stability, and can be relocated for future use.
Public comment urged recognition of the Ohlone and other historical subjects; Director Moyer said the Port has a pylon referencing First Peoples and invited the Ohlone chairwoman to participate on the host committee. Commissioners and staff discussed outreach to schools, partner institutions (including the Exploratorium), and authors for lectures, and confirmed pylons and banners will be displayed April 1 through Nov. 1.
