Evansville design review committee approves bright awning for Piece of Cake at 210 Main St.

The Evansville City Design Review Committee on Oct. 22 approved an application to restore the awning at Piece of Cake, 210 Main Street, replacing existing polycarbonate with painted aluminum panels in a bright pink with cream poles.

Kayla of AlbieSigns, the project presenter, said the company brought metal and paint samples and described the work as a restoration rather than a replacement. "We are trying to update a awning for Piece of Cake," Kayla said, and added that the aluminum "is able to be sanded down and repainted." She said the job should take about "1 to 2 days" and was expected to begin in early November.

Committee members praised the rendering and the decision to retain the awning, which several members said had been removed from other downtown storefronts in recent years. One committee member cautioned that the color choices were "pretty aggressive" and said they might be objectionable if the element were larger, but that the small size and streetscape context made the proposed treatment acceptable.

During discussion members confirmed that the plan calls for sanding the rusty framing, painting the curved steel framing and repainting the sign board above the awning to match the new finish. The committee took a voice motion to approve the application; Unidentified Committee Member (S2) moved, Unidentified Committee Member (S5) seconded, and the panel approved the proposal. The chair asked the applicant to collect paperwork after the meeting and reminded them to present the approval to the area plan commission for permitting.

The committee adjourned following the vote.
