Committee approves $40,000 for Habitat for Humanity down-payment assistance

The Affordable Housing Trust Fund Advisory Committee approved a request from Hope of Evansville to fund down-payment assistance for Habitat for Humanity homes.
Nikki Waller, director of relational and financial development at Hope of Evansville, told the committee the application requests $2,000 per home for 20 Habitat homes, a total of $40,000, to continue a program the trust fund has supported for the past four years. Waller said Habitat anticipates building about 20 homes a year in neighborhoods including Tepe Park and Jacobsville.
The committee discussed a seller fee that historically accompanied Hope-assisted purchases and clarified that Habitat homes are not charged that seller fee. A committee member moved to grant Habitat’s request for $40,000; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Staff noted the prior purchase order and contract used the same $40,000 arrangement and that Hope still has invoices to submit for some homes. The award is intended to prevent a lapse in funding so Habitat can continue its build schedule.
Next steps: staff will process the award so Habitat can invoice and continue accepting applicants.
