Digital 'Portraits of History' to use layered archival imagery, 90-second narrated videos and interactive maps
Summary
Creative lead described a three-story digital activation using layered archival imagery and a Ken Burns/parallax approach for an idle-state loop that transitions into a roughly 90-second narrated video; the team will use voiceover, on-screen callouts and map animations to provide context.

The subcommittee previewed a digital activation named "Portraits of History" that will present three stories—cattle, adventurers (including a narrative built around figures such as Billy Owen) and early mining—using archival imagery refined into animated "idle state" visuals that entice visitors to interact.
Chris Jones, associate creative director for content, messaging and storytelling, described the visual technique: layers of still archival images placed in parallax to produce a Ken Burns–style motion effect for an idle loop that attracts visitors. He said that when a visitor approaches, the idle loop will transition into a primary narrated video approximately 90 seconds long, and that the team will add modest on-screen text callouts (years, names) and occasional map animations (for instance, tracing an adventurer's route) to provide geographic context.
Chris showed examples of three transition approaches (organic ink, blur-and-fade, or custom transitions tied to an image element) and described fallback treatments if archival imagery lacks sufficient resolution (photo-album or type treatment). The team is coordinating with the Wyoming Historical Society (WHS) for archival research and asked the committee to confirm the initial three featured stories before DI proceeds with editorial and rough cuts; staff noted WHS materials are already being supplied for early story development.
Committee members urged selecting images and subjects that are broadly compelling and recommended creating a library to add further stories after launch. DI will return in November with scripts, storyboards and sample idle-state selections for review and approval.
