New PAC director outlines plans to prioritize student programs, expand community use

Courtney Burke, who became director of the Franklin Community School Corp. Performing Arts Center in January, presented her vision to the board on Sept. 9, saying she had revised the PAC’s mission to focus on student learning, performance and community partnership.
Burke said scheduled events this year include 24 internal school events and 19 external events so far, and that the district will prioritize internal events while using slower seasons to host outside groups to support operating costs without displacing student programming. She described plans to relaunch a high-school drama club, pilot a theater class, expand student employment (five current student employees support setup, tech, ticketing and concessions) and develop sponsorship and volunteer opportunities with local businesses and individuals.
Burke also described plans to integrate PAC programming with classroom learning — for example, procuring books for elementary classrooms and inviting students to watch preview performances — and to publicize a full season schedule earlier in the school year.
Board members asked brief follow-up questions; Burke said she would return with more event details and thanked the board for approving contracts that enable the season.
