Jefferson County approves $1 million purchase of 36.6 acres to secure gravel and expand landfill

Jefferson County commissioners approved the purchase of 36.6 acres adjacent to the County Line landfill to secure gravel resources and expand landfill capacity.
A commissioner explained that the acquisition will provide an estimated 30 years of gravel supply for county road and bridge needs and will allow expansion of landfill capacity as gravel is extracted. The board approved the purchase price of $1,000,000 with a three-part payment schedule: $500,000 as a down payment on the fifteenth of the month, $250,000 on Jan. 15 and the balance on Jan. 15, 2026. The funds will come from PILT (Payment in Lieu of Taxes) funds and solid-waste revenue, and commissioners said the purchase will not increase residents’ taxes.
"We've purchased, are going to purchase 36.6 acres for $1,000,000. We are going to divide that up into 3 payments," a commissioner said during the discussion, detailing the payment schedule. Commissioners noted the purchase price works out to about $27,000 per acre and that the site will be used both for gravel extraction and landfill expansion.
The board moved and seconded the acquisition and approved it by roll call. Staff will complete closings with Alliance Title and follow up on closing costs noted by the title company.
