County approves loaders, Craig V‑plow and courthouse security upgrades; turbidity meter bought for water testing

Jefferson County commissioners on Oct. 11 approved multiple equipment purchases and a security-system upgrade as the board considered limited bids and budget impacts.
After staff compared two bids for front-end loaders, commissioners voted to buy two John Deere 644P loaders using a Sourcewell quote. A motion to purchase two John Deere loaders for a total of $326,995.93 each was moved and seconded; the board approved the purchase on roll call. Staff said both manufacturers offered similar warranty coverage and couplers, but committee members cited operator preference and John Deere's strong service responsiveness when discussing the tradeoffs.
The board separately approved a 2024 Craig V-plow for $35,284.65 to expand winter plow capacity, and commissioners noted these purchases will reduce the remaining equipment budget for the year.
Brandy told the board that new DEQ turbidity rules require measured readings and recommended buying a Geotech turbidity meter; staff said the meter cost was approximately $1,400 though the motion paperwork rendered a figure differently. The board approved the purchase.
The board also approved a security upgrade for courthouse panic buttons and a wireless notification plan; commissioners authorized Omni Security Systems Incorporated to install the system for an amount not to exceed $12,405.70. Staff described the system as battery-backed with cloud-based notification (a $25-per-month optional subscription for phone notifications to bailiffs was discussed) to improve response time in an emergency.
Sourcewell, the county procurement channel cited for John Deere pricing, was used as the quote reference for the loader purchase. Commissioners asked staff to make sure purchases were properly processed via county purchase orders and to track ongoing subscription costs in future budgets.
Roll calls followed each motion; staff will finalize purchase orders and scheduling with vendors.
