Council member proposes ensuring veterinary expertise on Board of Health; charter revision process suggested

Council members raised whether the Board of Health should consistently include veterinary expertise. Councilmember Erin Evans and Councilmember Russ Bradford noted that while veterinarians are among eligible categories to serve, the charter does not guarantee there will always be veterinary or animal-health representation.
Bradford said the code allows a veterinarian as an option but suggested the council consider a charter amendment or a requirement that at least one board member have an animal-health background (for example, a veterinarian or vet tech), given the board’s role in public-health functions such as rabies control. The council’s charter-revision leadership said they are maintaining a repository of suggested charter changes for later vetting and will add this recommendation to that list.
Council leadership said that the board of health interviews and site visits for the new director of health will include attention to MAC and the animal-control function.
No formal change was enacted at the meeting; councilmembers asked staff to include the suggestion in charter-revision materials for later consideration.
