Independence honors Breen Baptist Church restoration with Carnes Weaver award

The City of Independence used Tuesday’s meeting to premiere a short video celebrating the restoration of the Breen Baptist Church and presented one of this year’s Carnes Weaver awards for historic‑preservation excellence.
Fred (city planner) introduced the video and noted the church is considered a significantly contributing structure within the Independence Historic District. Contractor Joseph Zacherson of Valley Woodworks described the work to the historic windows: many had deteriorated to the point that reconstruction rather than repair was required, including laminating and rebuilding window components to honor the original craftsmanship.
Owner Tammy Hayward attended the meeting and joined staff and the contractor for recognition and photographs. Council praised the project as an example of high‑quality restoration in the historic district.
